It’s a Jungle Out There – May 1

Over the last year I have been working on a commission for some friends. It was inspired by our mutual love (and hate relationship) for Kauai roosters. I took photos and did studies on a trip to our friends house on Kauai last year.

I completed it last week and sent it off to a new home! This piece is mixed media — inks and metallic leaf. I really enjoyed playing off the patterns in the metallic leaf and bringing them into the jungle foliage. Fun!

Dirt Road Diaries – May 1

Crane Hollow Barn

Crane Hollow Barn | Pastel | 7 X 5 | $150

Happy May Day!
I spend a lot of time driving the dirt roads near my home and studio in the early morning looking for new and old inspiration. I’m lucky to live close to so many beautiful, quiet places. This old barn is one of my favorite haunts. I set my easel up next to the road and painted away with only a few stray bikers and cars to interrupt the morning quiet.

Reflections on a plein air painting

The Promise of Spring | Pastel | 18 X 12 | $600

The Promise of Spring | Pastel | 18 X 12 | $600

I enjoy taking the plein air experience into a deeper exploration in the studio. The plein air study guides me since I have a ‘visual memory’ of that place. The time spent in looking and painting creates a richer studio piece — photos can never do justice to the light, range of color and texture that one can see firsthand.

The Promise of Spring – January 22

The Promise of Spring | Plein Air Pastel | 14 X 11

Last week I painted at Coot Lake. Much of the snow was melting from our recent storm here in Colorado. The late afternoon sun was warm on my face and sounds of birds filled the air. This January thaw reminded me that spring was just around the corner!
